Blue Lights College President Jacques K. Gilbert officially announced Nolan Adams as the new Head Coach for the Men’s Basketball program. Gilbert presented that selecting Adams is the right thing at the right time for the program. Gilbert added, “We need proven leadership to not only advance our basketball program, but to also get us back to our college mission and structure which has seemingly been abandoned.” This announcement comes after President Gilbert accepted Coach Genette Pulley’s resignation as Head Coach. The Thoroughbreds struggled in the 2021-2022 season after participating in a less than competitive intercollegiate college schedule.

Nolan Adams was selected through a national search process with more than 200 candidates. Adams spent the last 5 years as head men’s basketball coach at York College/ Cunny in New York. A NCAA Division III program.

Adams is very familiar with the local basketball scene, having coached in several area NCAA Division III schools and NJCAA junior colleges over more than ten years.

Coaching Experience:

Head Coach of the Borough of Manhattan Community College where led the Panthers to a 2015 CUNY Athletic Conference title.  He was also the 2015 CUNYAC and Region XV Coach of the Year.  His team earned 51 wins in just three seasons, and he recruited and coached the 2015 CUNYAC Player of the Year, CUNYAC Tournament MVP, two first-team All-Conference players and eight All-Region players.

Prior to BMCC, Adams was the Head Coach of Polytechnic Institute of New York University from 2011-2013.  During his stint, he took a team that had zero wins under the previous staff and brought their win total to 11 the following season.  His recruits also earned consecutive Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year Awards. He maintained that position until New York University absorbed the school the following season.

From 2008-2011, Adams was the Associate Head Coach at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, where he served as the head of recruiting and the director of scouting.  From 2005-2008, he was the Assistant Coach at his alma mater—St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn)—and helped lead the program to three straight conference championships.

Adams holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Relations from St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn), where he was also a member of their basketball team. He also has a Master’s Degree in General and Special Education from Touro College. Off the court, Adams is a teacher for the New York City Department of Education and works with eighth grade special education students.

“I look forward to building a program that the Apex community is proud of. I am excited about this unique mission focused college that offers a wonderful opportunity with life skills for many.”

Coach Adams has already made impact in short order by attracting a solid recruit class that will hopefully allow the Thoroughbreds to run out of the gate fully focused on the prize. The Thoroughbreds officially kick off their regular season traveling to Newport News, Virginia for NSAC conference match up with the Apprentice School on November 8th.
